Cottage School

Cottage school  brings children together to engage richly with literature, music, art, and poetry and investigate our world and history while incorporating Charlotte Mason's principles of living books, habits, and that children are born persons. 


Form 0 refers to all the years before formal academics begin in Form 1. During the early years, children explore their world and gentle academics are introduced through play. Our room typically consists of children ages 4-6. In Form 0, the children will focus on learning good habits and participate in outdoor free play, morning time which includes prayer, scripture study, and show and tells, indoor free play and choice time, nature study, art, poetry teatime, handicrafts, cooking, artist study, music which consists of composer study, folksongs, hymns, and theory, and beautiful read alouds.


Form 1B is a one or two year room and is for students that are ready for a gentle introduction into formal academics. It is geared towards children who would be considered kindergarten (optional, Form 0 may still be appropriate) and first grade. In Form 1B, students continue with learning good habits, studying scriptures, phonograms, cursive, brushdrawing, history, timeline, literature, geography, map drills, poetry, art, handicrafts, cooking, swedish drill, artist study, and music which consists of composer study, folksongs, hymns, and theory. They will also have opportunities for outdoor free play and indoor free-choice time.


Form 1A is a two year room for students that are considered second and third grade. In Form 1A, students will continue to study good habits, scriptures, copywork, history, timeline, literature, geography, map drills, poetry, art, handicrafts, cooking, swedish drill, artist study, and music which consists of composer study, folksongs, hymns, and theory. They will also have opportunities for outdoor free play and indoor free choice time.


Form 2 is a three-year room and is for upper elementary students that are in fourth through sixth grade. In Form 2, students again continue with good habits and study scriptures, copywork, history, timeline, literature, geography, map drills, poetry, art, handicrafts, artist study, Shakespeare, Plutarch, and music which consists of composer study, folksongs, hymns, and theory. They will also have opportunities for outdoor free play.


Form 3 is also a three year room for students that are in seventh through ninth grade. In Form 3, the class takes advantage of the group setting to undertake the grand conversation. within the grand conversation history, geography, government, civics, literature and scripture will be heavily investigated. Other topics of study that may be drawn upon are Shakespeare, Plutarch, music which consists of composer study, folksongs, hymns, and theory, artist study and poetry.  They also have a different special study for each of the three years.

Time: 9:30 am - 3:00 pm

*We'll take a week off for Thanksgiving and three weeks for Christmas.
